Specialty Cycle Maintenance Tips – September 2017
Spending time performing preventative maintenance on specialty cycles will save you a significant amount of time overall. It’s important to perform preventative maintenance on specialty cycles before they’re broken. When you take care of your fleet, you will minimize product failures. With less product needing repairs, you’ll save on repair expenses, have less downtime, and rent more product, maximizing your revenue
Chain Tension:
Droopy chains significantly increase the chance that the chains will come off of their sprockets causing the rider inconvenience or even injury if they cannot apply the brakes. For the Small Chain on a Deuce Coupe, Chopper or Quad Sport (inside the gearbox) here is a great tip: loosen the drive side axle nut on the coasterbrake, pull the outside front pedal down until the chain is appropriately taught, then re-tighten the coasterbrake axle nut. (See depiction at right.) For the Long Chain: Loosen the nut on the chain tension roller and adjust the roller as needed to achieve adequate chain tension and then re-tighten the nut. If you can’t achieve adequate tension because the chain has stretched you may need to use a chain breaker to remove a link or add a half link.
Headset:
Make sure Deuce Coupes, Choppers, and cruiser bikes’ headsets remains tight (no side-to-side or up & down play). Any movement can knock ball bearings loose and will cause premature wear and damage to the headset. To fix any side-to-side or up & down play, loosen the locknut from the bearing cone, and tighten the bearing cone against the bearing until there is no more “play.” Be careful not to over tighten by making sure the assembly still rolls freely, then tightly fasten the locknut and cone together. Double check tension and re-adjust as necessary.
For additional items, make certain your mechanic follows the preventative maintenance outlined on the first page of each section of the maintenance manual.
