Off-Season Electric Bike Battery Charging Best Practices
Maximize the life of those expensive lithium-ion batteries.
If you’re at the stage where your Electric Bike or Night Ride lithium batteries are not being utilized as often or you are closed for the season, it’s important to take measures in the off-season to maximize battery life.
The life of these lithium-ion batteries are measured in cycles. Batteries naturally lose a little power over time and when left plugged in, the charger kicks on bringing them back up to 100%, so charging them when they aren’t being used for the next day will use cycles that aren’t needed. This is true during the season as well, so if you aren’t open 7 days-a-week for Electric Bikes or Night Rides in the shoulder season, you should have a designated employee be responsible for unplugging the batteries once they are charged, on days they won’t be needed.
During the off-season when batteries aren’t in use whatsoever, it will only be necessary to plug in the batteries one day a month. This will prevent the shortened cycles from prematurely degrading the battery, while also assuring the battery stays charged. And while it may be a challenge, it’s important batteries be stored at a temperature between 50 and 85 degrees.
